physical development
Physical development involves developing your child's gross (large body) motor movements and their fine motor movements.
For the rest of the summer term we would like the children to participate in as much fun physical activity as possible, especially as the weather is now improving. Below are a selection of games and activities that can be done in short bursts which the children should enjoy doing.
Farms - 9.5.22-20.5.22
Our dance of the day this week is a Boogie Beebies favourite - Barnyard Boogie!
dinosaurs - 25.4.22-5.5.22
As part of our Dinosaurs topic, the children are loving this very energetic dance!
dance of the day
At Stafford Leys the children in EYFS have a dance they do everyday. The dances we do link to key movements for the writing of letters when we do handwriting practice. Research suggests there is a strong link between your child's physical skills and their future academic achievement. We spend time focusing on your child's gross motor skills (large movements) and their fine motor skills (small movements).
Here is a video below that focuses on the 'up and down' movements that we have started with and then run through all of our other dances.

Our first dance incorporated 'up and down' movements to the song Up and Down by The Vengaboys (we do not have the video on the screen when we do our dance).
Our second dance is Pump up the Jam by Technotronic - this incorporates up and down and side to side movements.
Our third dance is Don't Blame it on the Boogie by Big Fun. This dance incorporates up and down, side to side and a wiggle movement.
Our fourth dance is Let's Get Ready to Rumble by Ant & Dec. This dance incorporates up and down, side to side, circles and arch movements.
Our fifth dance is Reach by S Club 7. This dance incorporates up and down, side to side, circles and arch movements.

This Week...
We have spent time perfecting our jumping and landing skills. The children have had a small cone to use. They have jumped over it, forwards and backwards and side to side. We have also encouraged them to hop over it landing on the same leg and then trying with their other leg - they have found this very tricky! We have also had a go at leaping over the small come - starting on one leg and then landing on another.
Could you have a try at this at home? You could chalk out hopscotch outside or even set up a little obstacle course to have a try at jumping, hopping and leaping. Remember those bendy knees when jumping and keep your chest upwards.

The children have explored making a tuck, straight, star, pike and straddle shape. You can download the poster below to try some of these shapes at home.
