We have super topics and exciting cross curricular lessons to engage the children in their learning. Please find below some general information about Year 1.
- Homework will be set every week on Friday. This can be downloaded in the Homework section below. Please spend some time with your child completing this at home. Homework books must remain at home and if you would like to send us photo's of your child's completed homework please do so by the following Friday using our email: year1@staffordleys.com.
- Please make sure reading books are in school every day with reading records. Your child's books will be changed once a week. These books must be returned every Thursday.
- Please ensure all your child's items are clearly named including all their clothing items.
- Your child should only bring in a water bottle and their school book bag into school.
Year 1 Remote Learning
Please find below each weeks remote learning activities for you to do with your child during the Covid school closure. Each week we will post a suggested timetable of activities for you to access. Each day's lessons will be posted the night before. Each week, please can you email one piece of english, one piece of maths and one other piece of work, such as phonics/topic to; year1@staffordleys.com.
A member of our Year 1 staff will be contacting you once or twice a week to see how things are going. We will not be setting homework during the school closure.

Snow Activities - Here are some activities you may like to complete on today's snowy day. Remote learning is also available below.
- Update your weather chart - record today's temperature and compare it to last week's weather.
- Snow Day write up activity - t-t-16677-snow-day-write-up-sheet.pdf
- Explore the snow with your senses - t-tp-912-exploring-winter-with-our-senses-activity-sheet-.pdf
- Instead of making a snowman, try sculpting another object: a snow castle, a snow banana, a snow bed – use your imagination!
- Pack snow onto a tray or dish and paint it with water colors.
- Make 20 snowballs and investigate the different ways you can make 20.
- Throwing skills - Make a Bullseye target and throw snowballs at it. Record your best score!
- Go on a nature walk and observe the changes. What's happened to the water in a pond or river?

Strategies we use in school to support writing include the following:
- Discussing what sentence we are going to write first.
- Counting the words in the sentence.
- Stretching the word out to hear all the sounds.
- Using a phonics mat and common exception word mat.
- Modelling the first sentence before they complete it.
- Checking for capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
- Encouraging cursive handwriting and writing on the line.
How to challenge writing:
- Include 'and' to extend sentences.
- Include adjectives.
- Use different sentence starters.
- Handwriting - form all letters correctly, present work neatly.
- Use ? and ! where appropriate.
- Begin to spell words correctly.
