WELCOME TO YEAR 1

Welcome to Year 1!
At Stafford Leys we have three Year 1 classes:

Class 4 - Mr Doxey
Class 5 - Miss Jenkison
Class 6 - Mrs Rowley
Please find below some general information about Year 1.
  • We love to hear weekend news first thing on a Monday and this gives the children an opportunity to practise their speaking and listening skills . If you do something fun at the weekend and want to send in any photos for your child to share please send them to our email: year1@staffordleys.com.
  • Please make sure reading books are in school every day with reading records (as we try to read as often as possible in class). Your child's books will be changed once a week. These books must be returned every Friday.
  • Please ensure all your child's items are clearly named including all their clothing items.
  • Your child should only bring in a water bottle and their school book bag into school.

Our P.E. Days are every Tuesday and Thursday.

On rare occasions, these days may vary. Your child's P.E. kit should be in school everyday and each item of clothing should be labelled with their name. Please ensure your child's earrings are not worn on P.E. Days.

These are our Year 1 Common Exception Words - you may like to practise spelling these and thereafter writing them into sentences.

Writing at Home

Please download the phonics mat to help support your child with writing at home.
phase_3_and_5_sound_mat.docx

If your child needs the phase 2 sounds then please download this one.  phonics_mat_phase_2_and_3.docx

Strategies we use in school to support writing include the following:
  • Discussing what sentence you are going to write first.
  • Counting the words in the sentence.
  • Stretching the word out to hear all the sounds.
  • Using a phonics mat and common exception word mat.
  • Modelling the first sentence before they complete it.
  • Checking for capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
  • Encouraging cursive handwriting and writing on the line.

How to challenge writing:
  • Include 'and' to extend sentences.
  • Include adjectives.
  • Use different sentence starters.
  • Handwriting - form all letters correctly, present work neatly.
  • Use ? and !  where appropriate.
  • Begin to spell words correctly.
